This stage adaptation of an iconic Hollywood movie seemed to get one thing right, and that – fortunately – features in the latter half of its name
Dance, as an art form, is loved by many in Hollywood, Bollywood and beyond. When I glanced at my ticket before the curtain raised, I was a little bit shocked to see ‘The Classic Story on Stage’ and no mention of ‘musical’ which was what immediately made me back up on my seat.l For example, it’s advertised as a musical on TodayTix, or even on Google Search. Somewhere along its conception, the Venn diagram of musical and stage show for an instantly recognisable movie was thought up. The result, however, is that is is neither a musical nor does it reach Hollywood levels of excitement.
Part of the primary issue that I found was the length of piece, compared to other live shows in the West End. At 2 hours and 10 mins (including an interval), it felt rushed and the scene change choices were made with a movie audience in mind. The introductory scenes are short, but these confuse with the brushing over of some real moments. We barely get to understand the setting of Kellerman’s and the plot. I had high expectations from the initial Act 1 curtain.
The highlight, and I state this with a lot of respect for the group ensemble – and all cast members – is the choreography of the piece. The way the performers’ bodies move is quite spectacular and what really dazzled during this performance. Further, the highlight for me was Penny (played by Charlotte Gooch) and the skill she displayed outshone all the other cast members in the various dance numbers.
Set design is a passion of mine, and this production’s basic set really did miss the mark for me. There were times when the space was very empty, and I was hoping for a big theatrical moment. It never came.
In short, I wouldn’t recommend this if you aren’t interested the movie. Even then, you’d be better pressed going to your DVD player and popping the disc cosied up on the sofa.
